Regularly scheduled reblogging and ask-box answering starts up again tomorrow. Til then… did you know that the Oberlin bookstore sells keychain plushies wearing Oberlin shirts? And they’re not squirrels?
Love and other winter-y things,

At this risk of this sounding like a cop-out, It’s just how we do things.
In many ways, it’s about the experience and excitement of getting a physical piece of mail. Think about the stories you can tell about serenading/baking cookies for/hugging the mailperson on the day you receive your letter. Think about dancing around throwing your letter in the air. Think about framing your gorgeous but mildly tear-soaked letter and hanging it over your bed to watch over you til you get to here. And we definitely wouldn’t have amazing videos like this one, made by Sarah Mills ‘16. These moments (and more) are reasons to still use a physical letter. Yes, it’s stressful to wait for the mail, especially as you see others around the country receiving their decision letters, but patience is a virtue and all that important stuff.
From my perspective, as someone who works online day in and day out, nothing compares to getting something in the mail. I get emails all the time, but they’re fleeting. Letters? I cherish them. They spend some time on the fridge, then in a folder filled with other lovely pieces of mail in my desk. They were sent to me by someone who cared to do so, and that’s something I treasure.
Good luck, and enjoy this awesome swing dancing flash mob in Dascomb dining hall while you wait.

Not yet, since the deadline for early decision II applicants is January 2nd. The admissions office aims to send out decisions in late January (for precedent: last year, letters were sent on February 1st, the year before, January 30th).

Note: we have around a half dozen variations on “when will my ED letter arrive?!” in our inbox, so they’re all being answered here.
Letters were mailed on Friday, December 14th, which means the first wave hit mailboxes on Saturday. Depending on where you live (and the way zone maps work for ground mail), you’ll be receiving your decision between today and Friday.
Hopefully waiting, much like y’all, and watching this video while I do so.

I’m so glad you asked! Albus was named by Obies through an open name nomination then voting process (full story here). As you probably gathered, some of us are Harry Potter fanatics, so a name like Albus had to be a part of the mix (and ended up being the favored name — second only to Granola).

I’ve heard no new news from the admissions office, so we’re still going off of the original info I have:
At this time, admissions decisions are on track to be mailed around December 15. However, this date is more of a guideline than a set-in-stone date — decisions should be received soon after December 15.
While it probably won’t help for me to say “Don’t freak out!” I’m just going to give you a video to watch every time you start getting nervous. Here’s a peek into WOBC, 91.5 College and Community Radio.

Yes, you can :) But you only need to watch it 2,600 times because it’s already December 5th! Here is Professor of Organ James David Christie ‘75 taking us on a tour of ALL the Oberlin organs (there are lots!).

At this point, if you are applying EDII, the CSS Profile is what is necessary to generate an early financial aid estimate. The office of financial aid will eventually require you/your family to fill out the FAFSA form once you’ve filed your 2012 taxes.
If you have more questions, feel free to get in touch with the financial aid office directly! They are awesome at question-answering: financial.aid[AT]oberlin.edu

From the conservatory admissions office:
We’re working on early review decisions as we speak, and aim to have the word out on or around December 15th.
If you have any additional questions, don’t hesitate to contact them! conservatory.admissions[AT]oberlin.edu

Oh no! I’m sorry you missed our response. It’s here! Most of our asks get sent right out into our Tumblr blog, and since you asked anonymously, it definitely ended up live on our blog rather than in your inbox — if you want a personal reply from us in your ask box, log in and let us know you want a private response as a part of your question (that goes for everyone, not just you).
Paraphrasing from the previous post: not being accepted to MVP doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply to Oberlin — while the program is largely based on academic performance, it’s also got another limiting factor: the program that always gets more applicants than slots available.
