Anonymous asked: when are decisions out?

The letters were sent on Friday afternoon! Albus and everyone waved to the truck together, and then we ate some ice cream to celebrate our new class. Albus has peanut butter moosetracks, and I had mint chocolate chip.

All students are notified by paper mail. If you are an international student, your decision will be emailed to you as well so you get a prompt response and you will also receive a letter.

Dear italicsmine,
Ah, those walks in Wilder Bowl, the shared Decafe smoothies, the long study hours in Mudd… we remember them fondly too.
(We think a small infatuation with us is completely acceptable. We may have a bit of a crush on you, too.)
Love,

Active Minds at Oberlin – A Note for the New Semester

Dear first-years,

Welcome to college!

If you’re like most of us, you may have already felt some level of stress before arriving at college. Adjusting to a new environment is difficult and shouldn’t be overlooked; many of us older students struggled to make friends, let go of our home life, and excel in our classes during freshman year ourselves. You are not alone in your stress, anxiety, and fear of what the year will bring, but you should know that there are people on campus who want to help you have the best college experience possible.

The Counseling Center here on campus is located just down the street from Wilder Hall at 247 West Lorain Street and has walk-in hours from 11:00 AM until Noon Monday and Tuesday and 1:30 PM until 2:30 PM Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Appointments are available at times other than walk-in hours. If you need to talk after counseling center hours are over, you can call the Lorain County Mental Health line at 1-866-888-6673 or 1-440-282-2335. You don’t have to have a diagnosable mental health disorder to talk to a counselor—in fact; many students go there to talk about roommate issues, test anxiety, and adjusting to life in college. It is important to address what’s going on when you first recognize a change in yourself—waiting until things get really bad before you seek help isn’t good for your health, or your experience here on campus.

If mental health is something that interests you, I hope you will join a group we have here on campus called Active Minds. Active Minds seeks to promote a dialogue about mental health at Oberlin College and Conservatory by holding events such as movie screenings, panel discussions, and mental health awareness weeks. Our campus will be happier and healthier when we have an open dialogue around issues of mental health, so please join us in making that happen!

Have fun, study hard, and have a great year.

Jamie Flynn, Patrick Doherty, and Anne Wildman are the leadership of Active Minds, a student organization devoted to raising awareness about mental health on campus. For more information, visit www.activeminds.org or email active.minds@oberlin.edu.

YAY for Active Minds!
