Part creation story, part fangirling, but a post all about Lena Dunham ‘08 as written by Alanna Bennett ‘13.

On Friday, the network announced that it had picked up Dunham’s new comedy series, “Girls,” which she’ll write, direct the pilot and executive produce alongside Judd Apatow. According to HBO, the show, which takes place in New York, is “a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s.”

Dunham, who graduated two years ago from Oberlin College with a degree in creative writing, says she was drawn to directing simply as a way to express herself, citing the same approach her mother, conceptual photographer Laurie Simmons, has to her art. “It’s not because she loves the feeling of the camera in her hand,” explains Dunham. “It’s just the medium we’ve found for telling the stories we want to tell.”
