You’ll get a different answer to this question depending on who you ask, so I’ll answer with my own answer then direct you to the Oberlin blogs for some additional first-person experiences.
I grew up in a rural environment where my family had to travel at least an hour to do anything cultural or cool. Oberlin isn’t that kind of rural (There are sidewalks! Stoplights! Things you can walk and bike to! Lots of delicious things to eat! Places where you can buy basic necessities!) but it’s also not a city (but it’s near-ish to some; for context, Oberlin is a 30 minute drive to the outskirts of Cleveland, 2.5 hours from Columbus and Detroit, and around 3 hours from Pittsburgh). Even with those cities relatively close by, most students tend to stay on campus because there is a lot of awesome things happening here.
One thing Oberlin totally has going for it is concentrated awesome: you can decide in 10 minutes if you’re going to attend something and arrive within two minutes of it starting — and there’s no lack of things to do. More often than not, you have to make some hard decisions between several things starting at 8pm. (See also: our “What are you doing this weekend?” listings here on Tumblr — even though that’s only Friday-Sunday, I promise there’s lots to do during the week, too; just check out our events calendar.)
As promised, some places to visit on the Oberlin blogs to read more:
Hope this helps!
