Anonymous asked: I only live about 20 minutes away from Oberlin, and my parents are often at work all day. As a prospie, if I wanted to schedule a campus tour or an interview, would a parent have to be present or would I be able to go on my own?

You are welcome to visit campus with family or by yourself! (And do come visit, it’s a great place to explore, either on your own or with others.)

livingthroughthecollegeprocess:

Alright, so I’ve been thinking of how to put this up for a while and have concluded that the best way would be with a simple preface. Oberlin is the only college that I had the opportunity to do an overnight at with a friend of mine and as a result I am a bit more informed about some aspects of life as an Obie. Still, to keep things level with other reports I’ve given of other colleges, I am going to leave some specifics out, but if you want to know just message me and I’ll respond privately. Still, get comfy, this will be a long one.

Full account here. This is incredibly in depth and amazing. Thanks so much for sharing!

Anonymous asked: Do you think that actually visiting the campus holds more weight as far as showing interest than simply doing an alumni interview? Is it worth trying hard to visit even if it is from far away?

Since I’m not in admissions, I’m not sure what weight is placed on the optional items that are a part of the application process. I’m sure emailing college.admissions[AT]oberlin.edu will give you a better idea.

With both the alumni interview and the campus visit, the value of these two activities are very much for your benefit. Of course, Oberlin gets to find out more things about you because of an alumni interview and we get to see your bright shining face here on campus, but the goal of both are to help you learn more about Oberlin, which will hopefully make you more informed as you apply or as you make your decision.

For what it’s worth, it was far too expensive and far too far for me to visit Oberlin (boy, I wish I could have visited, but it just wasn’t in the cards… made me so so much more excited to get here for orientation, though!), but I did manage to have an Oberlin alumni interview (more on that here).

my sweetest downfall: My visit to Oberlin:

the-sentimentalist:

Personally, I loved it. Very much of it was how I expected, even though I couldn’t fully appreciate the atmosphere of the college since it was summer and there weren’t too many people hanging around town.

Summer is nice and quiet, but you’re right, it’s no comparison to the hustle and bustle of the semester. We promise it’s super awesome, though :D

marauderalways:

Oberlin’s known to be a fantastic conservatory and I play viola/violin but like never well enough to get into their program but they allow all students access to practice rooms and recording studios and we get free or really cheap lessons from upperclassmen or even the conservatory professors and there are tons of concerts all the time and musicians everywhere it’s like the perfect compromise for my life
This is their freaking sweet new jazz building

I have my first college interview tomorrow at Oberlin!

the-sentimentalist:

I really don’t wanna screw it up, but I’ve never done one before… I’m really looking forward to the tour though. Oberlin is kind of my dream school at the moment.

What sort of questions do they ask at interviews? Do you have any advice?

Any advice for an Oberlin interviewee? Reblog with your experiences or any insight you may have for prospective Obies!

GUYS I GET TO VISIT OBERLIN ON FRIDAY!

the-sentimentalist:

I’m so excited! This’ll be my second college visit and just from most of what I’ve seen online I have already fallen in love with Oberlin and would love to go there so, so much and I just hope I could get in there because that would make my life. :3

♥ Hurray!

Summer’s a bit quiet in Oberlin, but there’s some activities happening. There will be an OSTF play or two on Friday and Saturday, plus a summer concert series concert on Friday evening and probably some dancing somewhere around too. Cruise through the con too to see if there are any summer recitals from the music camps from the past few weeks. Have a fabulous visit!
